It's been a while since I have posted anything about Happiness. In the first post I wrote that my New Years resolution is a goal that I am committed to. I didn't even label it as a resolution, I labeled it as a goal in order to psyche myself up for this 'life change'. I don't doubt that it's possible to find happiness; however, my observations have led me to believe happiness isn't so far away, it's in the here and now. I have heard many psychologists and self-help authors talk about how only through living in the moment can true happiness be found. At first I was a bit skeptical but let me tell you—it works!

For spring break I decided to do a lot of whatever it is that makes me happy. My daughter Jannah and I spent a lot of time outdoors in the park. We walked, ran and watched the geese for hours. The weather was wonderful and I wasn't preoccupied with thinking about assignments or dreadful exams. While we were at the park I noticed how simple things make Jannah happy. I know this is an observation many beginner parents make. A parent can buy their toddler the latest toy and find him/her playing with the Tupperware in the cabinets. This simple easygoing attitude is what makes toddlers so lovable and fun to be around. When Jannah was watching the geese she wasn't concerned about going to the playground, or eating her snacks. She would turn around for a split second just to make sure I was watching them with her. Once she was reassured that I was there sharing that moment with her she giggled in delight.

When I engaged myself fully in the present and stopped chasing the mirage of what I thought happiness looked like, it was presented to me in the form of a moment with my precious Jannah.

Now I know I am not a pro at this whole happiness thing, and I am not qualified to prescribe a magic pill or write a manual on how to attain a happy life. However, I will make a very simple suggestion: ENGAGE in whatever you are ENGAGED IN.

My goal for the month of April is to have as many geese-like moments as possible.
