Domestic violence is an unfortunate reality in many communities throughout the world. Muslim communities are no exception. For those who are seeking refuge and assistance from abusive partners, there is hope. Noor Family Services is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving victims and survivors of domestic violence, with a focus on under-served immigrant populations. Recent immigrants tend to have the least access to courts and are the least knowledgeable about their rights, making them more vulnerable to further victimization.

Noor Family Services has three strategies to address the issues of domestic violence. The first strategy is to provide support and referral services. This often involves crisis intervention, temporary shelter relocation and referrals for mental health services. On occasion, NFS helps in other ways such as financial assistance with rent, food, clothing, hygiene products and other essentials.

The second strategy provides legal services. These services include help in obtaining TPOs or temporary protection orders from violent spouses, along with help pertaining to immigration, divorce, and child support. When NFS provides pro-Bono legal services, on occasion NFS covers the filing fees for divorce, mediation, and other court fees.

The third and final strategy involves educating our community about domestic violence. There are seminars on how to recognize the signs of domestic violence, what to do when a victim is seeking help and how to intervene if you witness domestic violence taking place. As our Prophet said, peace and blessing be upon him, “The Muslim is the one whose tongue and hand the people are safe, and the believer is the one whom the people’s lives and wealth are safe.” Noor Family Services is working hard to bring about safe and happy families in our community.
As a growing organization, they will have their first fundraiser on June 3rd, 2017 at the Alif Institute.

The event will raise awareness of the effects domestic violence has on victims and their families. Guest speakers include Imam Khalid Latif, executive director and chaplain for the Islamic Center at New York University (NYU). Attendees will also hear from two domestic violence survivors who will discuss the services they received from the organization. You can support their noble efforts by purchasing a ticket online here. Any inquiries can be directed to Chama Ibrahim, at 770-814-4429 or info@noorfamilyservices.org
