Event Description

The Atlantic Institute and Go Eat Give are excited to announce a series of speakers and panel discussion to raise awareness of intercultural beliefs around the world. The fourth event of the series will host a panel of esteemed speakers to discuss how everyday people can talk about conflict without being offensive to other cultures, religious and political beliefs.

 

The Panelists include:

Hrair Balian, Director of Conflict Resolution program at The Carter Center. Hrair Balian has served as the Director since 2008. He oversees the program’s efforts to monitor conflicts around the world and coordinates the Center’s cross-program efforts in the Middle East. Balian is also an adjunct professor at the Emory University Law School, teaching an advanced international negotiations seminar.

Dr. Mustafa Gokhan Sahin, Director of Academic Affairs at Atlantic Institute Atlanta. Dr Mustafa Gokhan Sahin has served as Director of Academic Affairs for over 3 years. He teaches about Islam and Turkey at the Istanbul Center. Sahin previously instructed courses such as the Introduction to Comparative Politics, the Middle East, and Politics and Culture in Developing Societies as a Visiting Assistant Professor at University of South Florida. He received his PhD in International Relations from the University of South Florida as well as a Masters in International Relations from Faith University in Istanbul.

Abbas Barzegar, Ph.D. Assistant Professor, Department of Religious Studies at Georgia State University. Abbas Barzegar’s specializes in Sunni-Shiite polemics, political Islam and African American Muslim history. He is the co-director of After Malcolm: Islam and the Black Freedom Movement, a digital archiving consortium housed at Georgia State University. Barzegar has written many articles and book chapters including Islamism: Contested Perspectives on Political Islam (Standford, 2009). He has been featured in The Huffington Post, The Guardian, CNN, Aljazeera and Fox News to provide commentary and analysis on multiple topics.

Lance R. Askildson, Ph.D. Vice-Provost & Chief International Officer at Kennesaw State University. Dr. Lance R. Askildson has served as the Vice-Provost and Chief International Officer at Kennesaw State University since 2013. In addition to his role, he holds appointments as the Executive Director of the Division of Global Affairs and Associate Professor of English Language & Linguistics. Dr. Askildson was the founding Director of the Center for the Study of Languages & Cultures at the University of Notre Dame while simultaneously serving as the founding Assistant Provost (AVP) for Internationalization and an Associate Professor of Second Language Education. Dr. Askildson is an interdisciplinary scholar of second language acquisition, language program administration & assessment, language learning technology and international studies.

Ticket includes light lunch and presentation. $10 in advance, $20 at the door.
