For the past several years, the Atlanta Muslim Community has been part of the larger metro Atlanta community in combating hunger in support of the Atlanta Community Food Bank. The Islamic Speakers Bureau (ISB) has lead and collaborated with other organizations to assist with the crucial needs of the community under the program “Being Your Neighbor’s Keeper.”

This year, the community food drive will be in memory of the three shooting victims in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Deah Barakat, Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha, and Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha. The ISB and the Atlanta Muslim community at large urge all Atlantans to participate in support of the food drive, as the victims were humanitarians, leaders, and contributors to their community and the world, and we wish to continue their legacy.

Over the years the Muslim community led food drive has grown to ten different organizations at ten different locations: Al Farooq Masjid-Atlanta, Islamic Society of South Atlanta-Stockbridge, Islamic Community Center of Atlanta-Fayetteville, Al Ihsaan Mosque-Riverdale, Roswell Community Masjid-Roswell, Al Hedayya Mosque-Marietta, ILM Academy-Roswell, Al-Falah Academy-Lilburn, Community of Bosniak of GA-Lawrenceville, and Hamza Islamic Center-Alpharetta.

Muslims believe that taking care of our neighbors, as well as the community at-large, is an obligation, as stated in the Quran:

“Worship Allah, and join not any partners with Him; and do good - to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, those in need, neighbors who are near, neighbors who are strangers, the companion by your side, the wayfarer [you meet], and what your right hands possess...” (Qur'an 4:36)
